Lawmakers file bills proposing a no-homework policy

ANC EARLY EDITION – LAWMAKERS HAVE FILED BILLS IN SENATE AND AT THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES THAT BAN TEACHERS ON GIVING ASSIGNMENTS TO STUDENTS FROM KINDERGARTEN TO HIGH SCHOOL.

PH Education Department Undersecretary Jesus Mateo, in an interview with ANC’s Lexi Schulze, introduced four bills on the no-homework policy.

Usec. Mateo first made mention of Senator Grace Poe’s House Bill (HB) No. 966, the ‘no homework on weekends’ bill. In this bill, it simply says there should be no assignments on weekends.

Usec. Mateo also discussed an earlier bill similar to HB No. 966, House Bill No. 392 s. 2010.

He explained that this bill has already been implemented since 2010 and that it only bans homework on weekends. Teachers are allowed to give homework on weekdays.

“The idea is you have to do the academic work during that time (weekdays), and then during weekends…it’s a time for the learners and (their) parents,” Usec. Mateo pointed out.

House Bill No. 3611 by deputy speaker Evelina Escudero is also mentioned in the interview, stating that all school activities should be done within the campus.

House of Representatives, Alfred Vargas’ no-homework law was also given attention. In his law, Lexi Schulze said that there is a fine and imprisonment enclosed in the bill.

With all the no-homework policy/bill, there are some teachers saying that it is impossible not to give homework especially with K-12’s curriculum.
